Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School, a community Jewish day school, provides a rich dual-curricular education that encourages independent and critical thinking, lifelong learning, self-awareness, and compassion. Heschel is located on 3.1 acres in Northridge, CA with a current student enrollment of 403 students in grades Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade. The school has two divisions (Elementary and Middle) located on one campus. The middle school has 170 students in Grades 6 through 8 with a faculty of approximately 30. The school’s core values of tradition, character, and community are incorporated into our belief of embracing the whole child by providing a program that works in partnership with our teachers, parents, and students. We provide an extraordinary learning environment that focuses on the development of the child academically, socially, physically, Judaically, and spiritually, which is reflected in the fact that our graduates are accepted at both secular and Jewish competitive high schools throughout the Los Angeles area.

The Position:
Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School seeks a Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School to start July 2012. The Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School serves as a member of the senior administrative team working alongside the Elementary Director/Assistant Head of School and reports directly to the Head of School. This position is responsible for all aspects of the middle school program. The Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School is dedicated to academic excellence within a caring and supportive community, emphasizing and modeling character and integrity within the school community. The Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School provides leadership to students, faculty, and parents while guiding the community, providing direction, and carrying out the vision of the school.
Qualifications:
The Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School must possess a clear understanding and commitment to the cognitive and developmental needs of middle school students, along with a vision of excellence and an educational philosophy in line with Heschel’s mission. Candidate must have a minimum of 4 years administrative experience in an educational setting which includes (but not limited to) curriculum oversight, programming, faculty mentoring and supervision. Former teaching experience is required and an advanced degree is preferable. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential and the Middle School Director/Assistant Head of School must possess strong written and oral communication skills along with an aptitude and commitment to technology and advancing 21st century skills.
Expectations:
• Vision and oversight for the middle school’s academic curriculum and programs,
including curriculum implementation, review and evaluation, scheduling, communication and conferencing.
• Faculty leadership through the recruitment, supervision, support and evaluation of middle school faculty. Models, encourages, and promotes professional development and learning opportunities.
• Engages with students and faculty regarding student programs, advisory, discipline, guidance, and evaluation. Works closely with the Head of School, parents, and students regarding high school placement.
• Works closely with the Head of School, Elementary Director/Assistant Head of School, and other senior administration regarding strategic issues, budget, admission, and schoolwide programs.
• Engages fully in the daily life of the school with enthusiasm, strong interpersonal skills, and a positive outlook.
• Skillfully builds upon the school’s recent momentum in enrollment and marketing.
• Positive representative within the larger community both within the independent school community and the Jewish community.
